WHICH CARS CAN BE HACKED?
Numerous tests from the National Insurance Crime Bureau and ADAC show that almost any car that can be unlocked and/or started without touching the smart key/key fob is at risk. Law enforcement across the country are now handling hundreds of these cases per day and urge car owners to take additional steps to ensure they are not a victim of this crime.
WHAT IS SIGNAL BOOSTING, SIGNAL CLONING & A RELAY ATTACK?
Criminals are using a simple device to clone, boost or relay the signal from your smart key/key fob. The device tricks your car into thinking the criminal is holding an extra key. They can unlock and start your car, giving them the ability to steal your valuables and/or your car in a matter of seconds.
Signal Cloning is when the criminal uses a device to copy the signal of your smart key/key fob. Once the signal has been cloned, they essentially have a duplicate of your key and are able to unlock, start, turn-off and restart your vehicle.
Signal Boosting is when the criminal uses a device to extend the signal from your car or smart key/key fob, which allows them to unlock and in some cases start your vehicle. The criminal is not able to restart your car if they shut it off.
A Relay Attack requires two criminals working together to clone and the relay the signal from your smart key/key fob to another device. Criminals are able to unlock, start, turn-off and restart your vehicle.
FROM THE NICB
NATIONAL INSURANCE CRIME BUREAU
"DURING OUR TESTING OF CARS, TRUCKS AND SUVS, THE DEVICE ACTUALLY STARTED 18 OF 19 VEHICLES WE WERE ABLE TO UNLOCK. WE WERE ABLE TO TURN OFF AND TURN THE CAR BACK ON AS LONG AS WE HAD THE DEVICE INSIDE THE VEHICLE... MORE POWERFUL AND SOPHISCATED DEVICES ARE BEING SOLD ONLINE AND SOME THIEVES ARE MAKING THEM USING INEXPENSIVE AND READILY AVAILABLE COMPONENTS."
